Rewarding Employees for Dedication and Service

On a sunny August morning, Paul Plagge woke early and prepared for an important client meeting at the Wilcox & Barton, Inc. corporate office. He studied sampling methods and procedures, created charts, and even dressed up with a shirt a tie, intending to dazzle the client with his knowledge and expertise.

Although Paul waited patiently in the conference room, the client never arrived, because the meeting had never been scheduled. Instead, Wilcox & Barton, Inc. senior leadership had secretly gathered to give him the surprise of a lifetime. After hiding in an adjacent office, they burst into the conference room to present Paul and his fiancé, Maggie, with a gift certificate for an all-expense paid honeymoon to any location in the world, an extra week of paid vacation, and $2200 cash to represent Paul’s 22 years of loyalty and friendship to partners Bill Wilcox and Russ Barton.

“To say I was surprised would be a huge understatement,” said Plagge. “I thought I was going in for a client meeting, but after I sat down with Bill, in walked Maggie, all the senior staff, and a photographer. Maggie had a huge bouquet of flowers, and there was a catered lunch for everyone to enjoy. I was blown away by the thoughtfulness and generosity of Bill, Russ, and everyone there.”

Such a thoughtful and generous gift is not unusual at Wilcox & Barton, Inc. Bob Rooks, Amy Roth, and Larry Mach received all-expense paid trips anywhere in the world in recent years.  Bob and his family traveled to Cuzco, Peru, where they worked with an international aid organization to help with health and sanitation projects in local villages. Between projects, they also completed the Salkantay Trail, a five-day trek to Machu Picchu. Amy took her husband and children on their first two-week vacation, traveling to Hawaii and Kauai. Larry chose to spend his vacation in Maui.

“We really try to support the ‘work smart, play hard’ mentality and try to create a family-friendly environment at Wilcox & Barton, so giving away trips and experiences is right up our alley,” says Bill Wilcox. “When employees go above and beyond for our clients, we reward them by giving them an opportunity to experience life outside of work where they can make memories with their families.”
