City of New Bedford Brownfields Redevelopment

New Bedford has an ambitious program aimed at assessing, cleaning up and redeveloping Brownfields to create a blueprint for revitalization of the city. Wilcox & Barton, Inc. is working with the City of New Bedford through an EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant and Revolving Loan Fund to help redevelop historic and abandoned properties.

Among the properties we’re helping to revitalize is the 1920 mixed-use film theater and commercial Capitol Theater building. Once rehabilitated, it will provide community space for the Community Economic Development Center and other local non-profits to expand programming and resources. The rehabilitated building will also provide office space, affordable housing, and resilience hub space. Beyond restoring the historic Capitol Theater building itself, the project will also contribute to the broader revitalization effort of the Acushnet Avenue corridor.

Wilcox & Barton, Inc. is also working to redevelop several other sites, including the former Chumacks Garage, an auto repair facility from the 1950s, and the former Dawson's Brewery property.
